asphaltum paving in accordance with the attached contract and specification. The terms of this contract are based on the 51 assumption that 100,000 square yards of paving will be laid. With the funds at present available this Government cannot enter into so large a contract. 5,000 square yards is the utmost that can be undertaken this year. I am inclin- ❤ed to think the Company will give the same terms for the reduced quantity. In the event, however, of their declining to do so, I am prepared to purchase the necessary material from them and to lay the paving departmentally.

The section of roadway proposed to be treated this year is that portion of Des Voeux Road between Pedder Street and the west side of Jubilee Street or an area of about 5,000
square far yards.

Under the terms of the proposed contract with the Standard Oil Company, the Government are to provide all plant, (which will, of course, be available for future extensions of the paving), all materials, (with the exception of the asphalte Compound), and all labour in laying foundations, asphaltum sur- -face and in preparing and mixing same. The Company, on the other hand, undertake for a charge of £2 (two) per square yard to pro- -vide the asphalte Compound and skilled supervision in preparing and laying same and to guarantee the paving for a period of three years with such reservations as are contained in the contract sub-
-mitted herewith,
